A collaborative study lead by CRE researcher Dr Robyn Marsh has recently been published in the prestigious The Lancet Microbe journal. The team identified bacterial biofilms (bacterial slime) from the lungs of children with persistent wet cough. These biofilms make it hard for antibiotics to penetrate and kill the bacteria, and helps to explain why some children get repeated infections once they stop taking antibiotics. Identifying biofilms will allow researchers to develop new treatments so that fewer children have regular infections and progress to having severe lung disease.
