The results of a study investigating the cost of hospitalisation due to a bronchiectasis exacerbation was recently published in Respirology and an editorial "Counting the cost of bronchiectasis" also followed in Respirology.

The study was led by CRE researchers Dr Vikas Goyal, Prof Steven McPhail, Prof Keith Grimwood, A/Prof Julie Marchant, Dr Brent Masters and Prof Anne Chang.

The study assessed 100 hospitalisations in 80 children. There was a mean length of stay of 12 days and the mean hospitalisation costs was $30,00 Australian dollars. Furthermore it was estimated that the cost to families was $2,700 when accounting for lost wages and opportunity cost. This study shows the substantial costs associated with pediatric exacerbations of bronchiectasis that require hospitalisation.
